How to recognize and avoid malicious emails

Oct. 25, 2021 Cyber Security

Learn more about how to protect your business by identifying common email scams

Malicious emails are constantly trying to infiltrate businesses and their networks to access sensitive data and install dangerous software on devices. By learning to handle these kinds of email threats, you can help ensure that your business is best protected from viruses, malware, and hackers.

Before diving into how to prevent these cyber threats, it’s important to understand the basics.

Why are malicious emails dangerous?

Email scams can threaten your business and employees in a variety of ways from stealing personal information and credentials to hacking into the very device it’s interacted with.

No matter how large or small the attempted hack may seem, these cyber threats can ruin the integrity of your business network and risk loss of trust from your clients.

How to identify a scam email

Malicious emails come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s important to understand the different kinds of scams and how to approach them to best equip yourself to handle cyber threats.

An email hack can include links, documents, or images that will take you to a malware-infected site if you interact with them. These sites can do anything from enter your computer software or bring a virus into your network. This can cause problems for your device, or your coworkers, and result in a security breach.

Think your boss is asking for your credentials in an email? Check again! This is a common trick done by hackers to get people to share their account information, such as usernames and passwords, called phishing. In a phishing attack, the hacker impersonates your employer to try and get you to interact with the scam to gain access.

How to prevent scam emails from piling up

Every email hack requires different actions after the fact, but they always need to be reported. It’s important to report the email address that sent you the scam to your email service provider and the FTC’s Report Fraud website.

Always remember to not interact with suspicious emails. Limiting interactions for every scam you encounter will better prevent these hackers from trying an attack with your email again. Pay attention and keep your inbox actively free of any malicious activity.
